Is it just me...

by deana24 @ 2008-08-29 - 09:45:36

... or do others of you find as you walk down a street people come up to you and ask you questions?

In the past two days I've had:

* Do you know the time? (fair enough; it was 11.40am)

* Do you know where I can get a 252 from? (there's a bus information place over there, sorry, love I'm not from here)

* Do you know where I can get a taxi to Salford from? (you can hail one on the street or there's a taxi rank at Victoria Station or outside the Town Hall).

These conversations have taken place in Bolton, Liverpool and Manchester.

Even when stood on a platform in Brussels a woman came up to me and asked me if I knew where a train went from, in bloody French as well so the added problem of trying to work out what she was saying and then reply 'Sorry, love, I'm not from around here, I'm English'. (This mostly consisted of my best Gallic shrug and 'pardon, je suis Anglais').

Is it just me wandering around answering the public's questions? And why are they asking me? Apparently I look local in Bolton, Manchester, Liverpool, Belgium... bloody anywhere. It happened in a record shop in Paris once.

Do I have 'helpful' tattooed on my forehead in invisible ink? If so, where can i get it changed to 'sorry, I'm in a hurry'?

Is this the right room for an argument?

Probably not, I'm on a day off so it's all 'flowers and kittens' with me today. Bloody hell, the sun just came out!

One consolation Deana, other folks must see you as being approachable, and that's nice.

Yes, for them.

Joe has a point there Deana. Can be a pain in the patootey though.

oh also my friend Helen has just said that you are lucky because wherever she goes in any country someone always tries to bump her off and she has had someone try to push her under a train in Paris (twice) which is France and off of a bus in Milan which is Italy and in Amsterdam someone tried to push her under a tram which is Holland so if you find out where to get your tattoo changed can you let her know too because she would like to get "please kill me" removed as soon as possible so she can go on her holidays again and not have to walk everywhere :¬D

Ah, I have been squished in doors of underground train in Amsterdam myself. The continentals are very bargey and you need sharp elbows. But if I find the Invisible Tattoo Removal Centre I'll let you know.

You must have looked very official... were you wearing a cap?

deana24deana24 [Member]

Nope. Though on all three occasions I was wearing my navy 'look how stylish I am' scarf. *ponders....*

Possibly, I was going for 'ironic' but satirical elegance is a hard path to follow sometimes... *especially when you're about to disappear up your own backside*

Maybe I should rip the badge of a VW and wear that instead. That might see them off.

Yes, but you help people for a living... kind of. I work in PR. I don't help people, I tell them things I want them to know.

It happens whether I'm looking official or not.

I try a stern, "I'm not listening" kind of look and they just persist!

I suspect not. Who is going to take this on? Yesterday someone asked me why the bus had stopped!

Have you tried the 'thousand yard stare' technique?

Puts most people off even looking at me, much less approaching and asking for help.

(Although there could be another reason). ;)

BOL!

I might give that a try.

I do get a lot of 'cheer up love, it may never happen' and all I'm ever doing is pondering aimlessly.

A friend of mine asked a Policeman in New York for directions. His classic response:

"Can you see staples in my forehead"?

Perhaps you could try that approach, or even better do what my friend from London does. He holds a hand out and shouts:

"NO"!

Tom.

Blimey, policeman in New York aren't very nice are they?

My trouble is I am naturally very polite and I like treating others as I'd like to be treated myself.

The London Man trick sounds funny but I'd worry I frightened someone.

Yep me too!

I was told by a very spiritual lady that this was due to the fact I had a good aura and therefore was very approachable! Perhaps you have a good aura too??

I had a strange woman come up to me today in a Santa Claus hat (a can short of a crate, obviously). She said, "And what's your name? Tell me about yourself." I wasn't in the mood to humour her and just walked off. Could have been a very interesting conversation, I think.
