Stolen ID: help wanted

by deana24 @ 2008-07-16 - 08:34:56

Nibs got a letter on Monday.

From a debt collection agency.

We rang them immediately to discover someone has been using his identity and his address where he lived about five years ago to order stuff out of a catalogue. They must have used details from post that wasn't redirected.

And of course they never had any intention of paying for it so the debt is left in his name.

I'm hoping if we can prove he didn't live there at the time that will be enough to satisfy them it wasn't him.

But has this ever happened to anyone and how do you go about clearing it up without getting credit blacklisted?

Should we be reporting it to the police?

Hope you get it sorted soon.
Someone tried to get my private email address password yesterday, I was not amused and changed my password immediately!
Am very paranoid that it's someone I know

If they don't have his signature, it's going to be hard for them to prove it was him who ordered that stuff, especially since he didn't live there at the time. Was the stuff ordered using a credit card, because if it was you're completely safe.

Sorry this happened, it's one reason why mail redirection is so important.

Tom.

You are so right re. mail redirection. But you can only tell someone what's a good idea can't you. You can't be rsponsible for them.

The bloke from the bedt collection agency is phoning back with the dates etc so hopefully that will help.

Same happened to my sister and whilst it took a few months to sort out, she did get all her money back and the fraudulant debts were cleared etc.

One of the reasons why I hate junk mail - redirection only carries on for so long and so many companies never seem to manage to take you off their mailing lists, no matter how much you yell at bug them.

Hope you get it sorted, medear!

Not much help - but we got stitched by a cloned bank card. But they accepted it wasn't us doing the spending and waived the debts. I imagine that proving His Nibs no longer lives there will mean much the same thing.

Hope so - it's a very worrying and tiresome thing to have to deal with.

I'd report it to the police. What a pain in the arse.
