Shame on the government if they meddle with the laws on abortion.
I didn't spend my time fighting David Alton's Bill to get kicked in the teeth by the Labour party, of all people, twenty years later.
Don't do it.
Makes me very cross!

I take it you don't want this bill passed.
I see it as a good thing. Looking at my nephew who was born at 23 weeks and survived it makes me feel sick that women abort babies of that gestation.
I'm not anti abortion, but 24 weeks is too late

But very, very few abortions are ever carried out that late. No one would ever leave it that late if there were a choice to have it earlier, if the system had not failed them so completely. Changing the law gives them no safe, legal choice and that's not good for anyone.
Yeah but some are, I have too reasons for not feeling confortable about agreeing to late abortions (they are on my blog)
Surely it's better to work at getting the system right rather than continuing to abort babies who have a chance of surviving should they be born

It is absolutely right that we should make the system work better.
But until it does work better - and we can see it's workig better because the number of late abortions drops, maybe to zero - why hurt another woman? Why force her to consider alternatives that are going to endanger life? Why not make the system work from within instead of trying to smash it from outside? Why use the law when the law is not the answer?
I have every sympathy from women in that position. But babies born at 23 weeks gestation can survive. I don't feel abortion should be an option post 22 weeks.

And of course you are entitled to hold your views. I wouldn't expect you to do anything else. But my concern is the woman and her health, first and foremost and I won't be moving either.
We will just be agreeing to disagree here, in the true spirit of democracy and freedom of speech. Thank you.

It's an incredibly sensitive issue I know. Thank goodness it is such a rare occurance.
I completely agree that the problem is with The System, but The System, any System, is never going to get sorted out in a hurry, just like every other problem in this country.
I simply have to look at it as if a foetus born at 24 weeks or just under can survive, I see no justification in abortion that late. I simply can't. I'm trying, believe me I really am, I listen to both sides of the argument...but in the end it comes down to the key word: 'viable'. It's ending a life that wouldn't be ended at any later point in the pregnancy because the law says anything beyond that is illegal.
I hope they lower it to 20 at least.
But no one's right.
Sigh.

If I'm reading the figures right less than, or about, 2% of abortions take place after 20 weeks. It's impossible to second guess the circumstances of what is a very, very small percentage. But if they are carried out to preserve a woman's health then that to me seems right.
But like you say, Soy, it's an incredibly sensitive issue.
But I do think it's good we can debate it. That is healthy.

It is healthy.
I completely get that it happens so rarely and in exceptional cirumstances and I can't imagine being in such a situation.
But I still just can't get it out my head that it could survive.
Bah!
