I learned something from Rick Stein the other night. Salad. means 'salt added'. Makes sense when you pull it apart. Sal - salt. Ad - added. But who would have thought that salad had its roots in salt, not green leaves?
I noticed another one the other day. 'Car' and 'sh'. Pick them up, smash them together and shake them about and what do you get? Crash.
Any other strange-but-true words out there?

Oh dear, was I not clear? I thought I'd emphasised it was all about the salt, nothing to do with the leaves, really. Sorry.

Pro How interesting... I'd never thought of salad as being salt added either... would never have occurred to me in fact.

Pro Mmm. I suppose saline mean salt... in water I think. And those salts they used to give swooning Victorian women...sal volatile. So, I see where it comes from. But I would have never guessed it

Me neither - I'm seeing sal/t everywhere now... and of course the romans gave their solders salt rations in their pay which is where the word salary comes from.

How odd - I would never have associated salad with salt! As for crash - well, that's logical, although I wouldn't have worked it out.

The leaves part is irrelevant. It was all about salted - preserved - vegetables. Leaves go with them.
